The stability, justice and prosperity of any society are inseparable with the leadership and governance. The rule of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the Islamic history is a fully developed example of ethical governance, which relies on the values of justice, consultation (Shura) and accountability. This paper will focus on the leadership and governance systems of the Prophet (PBUH) which were evident in the Seerah and how these principles can be applied to the early Islamic state in Madinah. The study utilizes the qualitative analysis of primary Islamic texts such as the Quran, The Hadith texts and classical Seerah documents to discuss the pillars of Prophetic governance. This paper has emphasized how the Prophet (PBUH) made justice the fundamental principle of leadership, made sure that he consulted his followers in making decisions, and held himself accountable and transparent. It also looks at the administrative practices and institutional arrangements that occurred in the Prophetic period such as the Constitution of Madinah and the appointment of the governors and the judges. The results indicate that Prophetic model of governance is a balanced model that incorporates ethical leadership, social justice and responsibility to the people. The paper concludes that the leadership ideals exhibited by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are still very relevant in the contemporary debate on ethical leadership and responsible leadership in the modern societies.
